If people in the back of the room can hear the presenter clearly but cannot comfortably see their face, expressions, demonstrations, or other important visual details, it may be time to add IMAG.
IMAG stands for Image Magnification: live cameras capture what is happening on stage and display it on projection screens, LED walls, or large displays so people farther from the stage can see the program clearly.

In that case, the smaller event may benefit from IMAG more than the larger one.
Audience count is useful, but viewing distance is usually the better starting point.
Seeing the Presenter Is Different From Seeing the Presentation
One of the most common planning mistakes is assuming that because the audience can see the PowerPoint, they can also see the presenter.
Those are two separate visibility problems.
A presentation screen can be large enough for readable slides while the person standing beside it is still too small for someone at the back of the room to see clearly.

IMAG Must Be Low Latency
One of the most important technical requirements for local IMAG is low latency.
If a presenter moves their hand and the image on the screen visibly follows later, the delay is distracting.

A typical professional local IMAG signal path might be:

Those paths may be entirely appropriate for remote participants but can introduce too much latency for local image magnification.

The Audience May Need More Than the Main Screens
Large rooms and outdoor sites may need additional displays farther into the audience.
This is similar to the way a large sound system may use delay loudspeakers.
A pair of large screens near the stage may work well for the front and middle of the audience but become too small for people much farther away.
Additional video displays might include:
- Large TVs
- Additional projection screens
- LED displays
- Suspended monitors
- Rear audience displays
- Side displays
Their job is not necessarily to create another independent presentation area.
They extend useful viewing coverage into parts of the room or site where the primary displays are no longer large enough.
The same design principle applies to audio and video:
coverage should remain appropriate throughout the audience area.
Camera Position Matters
A good camera in the wrong location still produces a bad shot.
Camera planning should consider:
- Sightlines
- Camera height
- Facial angle
- Perspective
- Audience obstruction
- Zoom distance
- Aisles
- Camera risers
- Stage height
- Room geometry
- Presenter movement
A camera positioned too low behind the audience may spend the entire show looking through people's heads.

LED Walls Can Affect Camera Setup Too

When a large audience member asks a question, people elsewhere in the room often want to see that person.
A Q&A workflow might be:
- A Q&A microphone reaches the attendee
- A camera operator or PTZ operator finds the attendee
- The Video Director confirms the shot
- The screen switches to the audience member
- The question is asked
- The program returns to the presenter or panel
This takes coordination between the audio and video departments.
If the room is large, wide, or divided into several audience areas, both the microphone and camera plans need to account for that layout.

Confidence Monitors Solve a Different Problem
A confidence monitor is generally intended for the presenter or stage participants rather than the audience.
It may display:
- Current slide
- Next slide
- Presenter notes
- Countdown timer
- Remote participants
- Program return
- Other show information
This helps presenters remain oriented without repeatedly turning around to look at the main screen.
A confidence monitor does not replace IMAG.
They solve different problems:
- IMAG: Helps the audience see what is happening on stage
- Confidence monitor: Helps the people on stage see the information they need
Both may be valuable on the same production.
Recording Is Not Automatically the Same as IMAG
A camera system being used for IMAG can also be recorded, but the desired recording should be discussed before the equipment is finalized.

The best recording workflow may require additional routing, recorders, storage, or operators.

How Much Video Crew Does IMAG Require?
A simple one-camera system may be operated by one experienced video operator.
As the production grows, video becomes a department with several specialized positions.
Staffing does not scale in a fixed order.
For example, a Video Director may also control PTZ cameras on a smaller show, while graphics may still require a dedicated operator if lower-thirds and overlays are frequent or must be timed precisely.
The right staffing depends on which tasks need to happen simultaneously.
Video Director (VD)
The Video Director manages the live visual program.
The VD decides what the audience sees and may be responsible for:
- Selecting camera shots
- Selecting presentation sources
- Coordinating camera coverage
- Managing visual pacing
- Coordinating IMAG
- Working with the switcher
- Managing transitions between cameras, presentation, playback, and graphics
- Managing different video destinations
On smaller or medium productions, the VD may also:

As workload increases, those responsibilities may be separated.
Technical Director / Switcher Operator (TD)
The Technical Director, or switcher operator, executes the video switching required by the program.

PTZ Operator

A dedicated PTZ Operator becomes useful when there are enough cameras or enough movement that the VD can no longer direct the show and prepare all of the PTZ shots at the same time.
Do not assume that adding PTZ cameras automatically means adding another person.
Presentation / Playback Operator
The Presentation / Playback Operator manages the content being shown on event displays.
Depending on the production, this may include:
- PowerPoint
- Keynote
- Videos
- Walk-in content
- Holding screens
- Logos
- Sponsor loops
- Remote presentations
- Backup presentation computers
- Confidence-monitor content
For an important corporate program, presentation operation can be a show-critical role.
Presenters frequently arrive with:

Someone needs to receive, test, organize, and cue that content while the show continues.
On simpler programs, presentation and playback may be combined with another video role.

- Other moments the audience may benefit from seeing again
Most corporate keynote or panel programs do not require replay.
When replay is an important part of the program, however, it is often better treated as a dedicated function rather than asking an already-busy Video Director or presentation operator to manage it.
Video Show Caller
A Video Show Caller is a more specialized video-department role.
It is generally used on larger productions or programs where the cameras need to obtain specific shots in advance of when those shots will be needed.
This is especially useful for:
- Product demonstrations
- Detailed technical demonstrations
- Awards
- Planned entrances
- Specific audience pickups
- Complex multi-camera moments
For many corporate programs, the Video Director can communicate directly with the camera operators.
A separate Video Show Caller becomes valuable when the next shot cannot simply be found reactively.
For example, during a technical product demonstration, the Video Show Caller might tell a camera operator to find:

- A hand movement
- A detail on the product
before the presenter reaches that portion of the demonstration.
That allows the camera shot to already be framed when the VD needs it.

Depending on the production, responsibilities may include:

- Format conversion
- Switcher infrastructure

On smaller events, the Video Director or another senior operator may also manage these responsibilities.
On a larger system, a dedicated Video Engineer allows the live operators to concentrate on the program while someone remains responsible for the underlying signal infrastructure.
Video Staffing Often Peaks During the Show
Video is often one of the largest departments during the actual program, even when it is one of the smaller departments during setup and strike.
A multi-camera production may include:
- Video Director
- Technical Director
- Camera Operators
- PTZ Operator
- Presentation / Playback Operator
- Graphics Operator
- Replay Operator
- Video Show Caller
- Video Engineer
Many of these roles exist because their work must happen simultaneously in real time.
A camera needs to be framed while another camera is on-air.
The switcher needs to execute the current shot.
The presentation operator may need to advance the next slide.
Graphics may need to prepare the next presenter's name.
A PTZ camera may need to move to another position.
The next demonstration shot may need to be located before the presenter reaches it.
One person cannot realistically perform all of those actions at the same time.
During setup, however, those same positions may not all require separate people.
Once the cameras, switching systems, displays, cabling, and control positions are installed, an additional camera operator may be needed almost entirely during the actual program.
That is why an event might have three people building the video system but seven people operating it during the show.
This is a normal staffing profile for a more complex multi-camera production.

- Elevated stage
- Relatively short room
