SDI Video Distribution for Events: Sending Video to Multiple Screens

Short answer: when one presentation or program must reach several screens—or one screen is too far away for a practical passive HDMI run—the source can remain HDMI at the laptop, travel over SDI through the venue, and return to HDMI at a TV or projector. The distribution system gives every destination a controlled program feed instead of requiring separate presentation computers.

First decide what types and sizes of displays the audience needs, then design the distribution system that feeds them.

Transport and distribution are different jobs: transport moves a signal to one destination; distribution creates controlled outputs for several destinations.

Why use SDI instead of a very long HDMI cable?

HDMI is excellent at the endpoints

Laptops, media players, TVs, and small projectors commonly use HDMI. HDMI is not an amateur or inherently unreliable format; it is often exactly right at the source and destination or for a short direct run.

SDI is excellent for transport

Professional event systems often convert HDMI to SDI for the long-distance portion. SDI offers locking BNC connectors, durable and routable coax, more predictable long runs than conventional passive HDMI, active distribution through professional amplifiers and routers, and a clean path to multiple destinations.

How far can SDI run?

There is no responsible universal distance. Reliable reach depends on the SDI format and data rate, cable type and quality, connector quality, transmitter, receiver, and intermediate devices. Lower-data-rate HD-SDI or 3G-SDI can generally travel farther over the same coax than higher-bandwidth 6G- or 12G-SDI. Longer systems may use reclocking, distribution amplifiers, or fiber transport.

One destination

The Single Screen Video Distribution Kit – HDMI to SDI currently includes an HDMI-to-SDI converter, one 50 ft SDI run, and an SDI-to-HDMI converter for an up-to-1080p HD workflow.

Two destinations

The Dual Screen Video Distribution Kit – HDMI to Dual SDI currently supplies two independent 50 ft SDI runs and two SDI-to-HDMI conversions so both screens receive the same source.

Three or more destinations

Use an active SDI distribution amplifier, video router, or suitably equipped video switcher. Do not improvise a passive BNC split: each destination should receive a correctly buffered or reclocked output.

Example: 300-person deep ballroom

A practical design may use a main projector and screen at the stage plus two 75-inch repeat displays toward the rear. The presentation feed originates at video control, is distributed over separate SDI runs, and converts to HDMI at each TV. The TVs do not need independent laptops; they reproduce the same switched program feed.

This reduces operator complexity, synchronization problems, wrong-slide risk, and dependence on long HDMI cables. For a deep audience, distributed repeat displays may be more effective than continually enlarging the front screen.

Example: gala with two front screens

Presentation laptops → switcher → dual SDI outputs/distribution → left projector + right projector. Both screens carry the same program. If IMAG is added, the operator can switch slides, playback, cameras, logos, and holding slides while every audience display follows the same output.

Confidence monitors and presenter-specific feeds

The same transport concepts serve presenter confidence monitors, DSM/stage monitors, timer or notes displays, and backstage program monitors. A mirrored program feed is different from a presenter-specific feed such as notes, next slide, or timer; separate content may require dedicated switcher or processor outputs.

Overflow and remote areas

SDI can feed lobby monitors, green rooms, overflow rooms, registration, backstage, and adjacent banquet spaces. When a route becomes very long or crosses buildings, fiber, network video, or another architecture may be more appropriate. SDI coax is useful, not universal.

Network video does not mean plugging converters into whatever Ethernet network happens to be available. It requires compatible endpoints, switching, bandwidth, configuration, and operational planning.

Latency and synchronization

Converters, scalers, projectors, TVs, and LED processors can introduce different processing latency. Differences are most visible with IMAG, fast motion, lip movement, or a screen visible behind a live presenter. Ordinary slides are less sensitive. Professional design considers end-to-end latency when several displays are simultaneously visible; it should not promise zero latency.
