For a cultural music show at Leo J. Ryan Park's lagoon-side amphitheater in Foster City, NextLevel provided the main-stage sound system: a Meyer Sound Melodie compact line array. Monitors and backline were provided by another vendor.
Project need
The challenge
The amphitheater's terraced lawn seating sweeps wide around the stage and climbs away from it, with the lagoon open behind the performers. With conventional speakers, getting enough level to the top rows means overwhelming the people closest to the stage, and outdoors there are no walls to help carry the sound back. The goal was for every seat to hear the show comfortably and clearly.
Delivery
Our approach
A line array lets us shape where the sound goes. We set up the Melodie system so its coverage reached the upper terraces while the front rows heard the show at a comfortable level instead of a wall of sound. The result was consistent volume and clarity from the front steps to the back of the lawn.
Behind the scenes
The night before, our crew was striking another venue until 11pm. We were back at the shop at 5am and on site in Foster City by 7:30am, and the sunrise panorama above was taken before the first case came off the truck. Early load-ins and tight turnarounds come with live events, so our crew is available around the clock by arrangement.
